Why UV Inkjet Samples Should Use the Real Substrate: Five Adhesion Checks
UV inkjet results depend on the substrate surface, pretreatment, ink, curing and line conditions. Testing the real substrate with production artwork and a realistic speed provides a more useful basis for checking adhesion, clarity and QR-code readability.
The same UV inkjet settings can produce different results on different materials. Carton, film, labels and panels vary in surface energy, coating, cleanliness and flatness. Sample testing should therefore use material from the actual production supply whenever possible instead of substituting plain paper.
The first check is sample identification. Record the material name, supplier, batch, surface treatment and storage condition. If the production material changes, verify the print result again rather than relying on an earlier sample.
The second check is pretreatment. Some low-surface-energy materials may require cleaning or corona treatment. Compare untreated and treated samples while keeping the other conditions consistent, and record the observed effect on wetting and adhesion.
The third check is image and code quality. Use artwork close to production, including text, logos, barcodes or QR codes. Inspect edges, fine lines, small text and solid areas. QR codes should also be scanned at the intended distance and with the intended reading equipment.
The fourth check is adhesion and curing. After printing, evaluate the sample against the actual application, such as wiping, bending, rubbing or downstream packaging. Agree on the test method, waiting time and acceptance criteria before the test, and retain the results.
The fifth check is the line condition. Sample speed, product spacing, print distance and trigger position should be close to the real line. A low-speed laboratory sample only demonstrates the result under that test condition and does not replace production validation.
